Gillian Meakin, Watercolours

For the past fourteen years I have been fortunate to spend every winter, along with husband Denys, in warmer, more exotic climes. Every November we leave Bowen with a backpack each in search of new adventures. The majority of these trips have been to Asia it's affordable, we enjoy the food and we get to experience life in a different culture. Countries visited include: Bangladesh, Burma, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam. There is a wealth of sketching opportunities in these countries in local markets, quiet streets and temple grounds. Countries with a colonial history provide particularly appealing architectural subjects. Sketching quickly suits my style, and warmer temperatures mean quick drying times for paintings. Back home again in March I use these sketches and Denys's photos as a starting point for my watercolours. |
